I have suffered with migraine for most of my life as did my grandmother, my mother, and now my daughter. It's a genetic curse, but there is help.
I clearly remember my first migraine. I was visiting with friends, when a strange zig zag of light flashed across one eye, almost like lightening. People were talking to me, but I couldn't understand. I felt disoriented and weak. My arm went numb and everything seemed as if I were looking through broken glass Then came the awful throbbing pain that lasted for two days. I went to the doctor, but in those days migraine was not taken seriously. I continued to have them occasionally, about two a year, then four a year, then one a month and finally it became intolerable at one almost every day. It was hard for co-workers to understand the weird symptoms. Unless you've had one yourself, it's hard to comprehend. I had to quit my job. There were times when the symtoms were so intense that I couldn't even remember my kids names, couldn't speak coherently or read. I was afraid to go anywhere for fear I wouldn't be able to get home. I had given up on doctors who prescribed drugs that were ineffective and had bad side effects. I resolved that this was my fate, that migraines were going to control my life. Then came the migraine that changed everything. On the way to meet a friend for lunch, I got a migraine and I barely made it there. I became disoriented and she got scared and called an ambulance. I remember an oxygen mask and sirens, everything else was cloudy. My blood pressure was over 200 and I was given intravenous drugs. I knew it was time to find real help. I found a neurologist who explained to me how migraine happens, and the importance of migraine triggers. It made sense, but I was uncomfortable with the amount of pills prescribed and there were a lot of side effects. I decided to base my treatment on food (you should always consult a doctor before making changes.) Gradually, as I learned about food triggers and kept a food diary, I began to feel better and didn't have a migraine for 2 months! I thought I was cured and started eating foods that were "bad" again and had three migraines in a two week period. That made a believer out of me! My migraines became infrequent and manageable.
Through many hours of research, reading labels and experimenting with recipes, I decided to put it all together and create this book and possibly help other people with their migraines. I am not a doctor, I can't guarantee it will work for you as migraine is a complex disorder, but I can tell you that it changed my life. My wish for you is many migraine free days!
